In the past, lacrosse is famous in Canada and United States. Now this sport becomes popular in Australia and United Kingdom and emerge in Europe and Asia. This trend indicates that lacrosse is becoming an international sport activity.
The Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) was founded in August 2008. The FIL sponsors 5 world championship tournaments, which are the World Lacrosse Championship for men’s field lacrosse, the Women’s Lacrosse World Cup for women’s, the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship for box lacrosse and the Under-19 World Lacrosse Championships for men and for women. Each championship is held every 4 years.
The European Lacrosse Federation (ELF) was founded in 1995 and organized the first European Lacrosse Championships in the same year. This championship also holds every 4 years. The Asia Pacific Lacrosse Union was founded in 2004 and currently holds the Asia Pacific Championship for both men’s and women’s.
Currently, lacrosse is not involved officially in the Olympic Games.
